What Is A Dental Crown?

If you have experienced tooth decay, a root canal or have a cracked, chipped or broken tooth, you may be in need of a dental crown. Porcelain ceramic crowns are commonly used in restorative and cosmetic dentistry to improve the strength and appearance of a weakened tooth or correct the look and feel of a tooth that is misshapen or damaged. Because they look and feel just like regular healthy teeth, dental crowns have many cosmetic and restorative benefits and can last many years with a proper dental hygiene routine.

How Does a Dental Crown Work?

Dental crowns serve as a way to cover or “cap” the surface of a tooth or replace a missing tooth with a dental implant or bridge. When a dental filling is not sufficient to restore an area of decay or damage, a dental crown is used to properly seal the tooth and restore its look and function. Oftentimes a dental crown will be used to seal a tooth after root canal therapy. After a dental crown is placed it may look, feel and function just like a regular healthy tooth.

What to Expect: Your Appointment With CEREC

At Eagle Dental we’re honored to be part of the small network of dentists across the nation that are specially certified and trained in administering dental care with CEREC technology. At your appointment for a dental crown Dr. Dulde will carefully examine your current dental health and keep you informed about all of your treatment options. Should you need a dental crown, our CEREC system and CAD/CAM technology will capture a 3D digital image of your mouth to serve as a comprehensive mold of your teeth. Our team will then partner with you to virtually design your custom crown for its ideal color, shape, size and fit. Once your crown is made it is polished, adjusted and professionally sealed into the mouth with a strong dental cement. Your new smile will look natural and strong for many years.
